The world has been impacted by the Coronavirus on a large scale. There has been a large amount of media coverage on it which can make it difficult to work out the myths and the facts. When it all comes down to it, the World Health Health Organisation states that the risk of infection is in fact low in most countries and there should be no travel restrictions.
The official definition of Coronavirus as stated by the World Health Organisation - it is a “large family of viruses that cause illness from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). COVID-19 originated from exposure to animals at a live animal market in Wuhan.”
Symptoms from the infection include a fever, cough and issues with breathing. It can also lead to pneumonia, kidney failure and in severe cases, death.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has recommended travellers who are unwell or who are elderly and those with underlying medical conditions to avoid travelling to highly affected destinations that include China and Iran. The World Health Organisation however has advised that travel should proceed as normal at this current point in time.
International travellers are advised to follow hygiene etiquette by washing hands frequently with soap and water or with a hand sanitiser. When coughing or sneezing, your mouth and nose should be covered. Keep a distance from people who are showing symptoms and only eat meat and eggs that are thoroughly cooked.
Many amazing destinations in the world have a lower risk factor by the virus so travelling should still be on your agenda. Examples include the Cook Islands and Fiji which are beautiful places to explore. Even within Australia, there are many stunning places to visit including Port Douglas, Broome, and Lord Howe Island.
Plus if you want to take advantage of the current offers on flights due to the volatile situation with the virus most airlines are giving waivers within 12 months to change your flights in the future.
